ICFO Alumnus Roberto de León Montiel receives the UC MEXUS Monarch Award 2015

The University of California Institute for Mexico and the United States (UC MEXUS) has recently recognized ICFO Alumnus Dr. Roberto de León Montiel with the Monarch Award 2015, a prestigious prize aimed at giving substantial funding to postdoctoral researchers to further advance their scientific research goals. The Monarch Award recognizes the most outstanding proposal submitted to the UC MEXUS-CONACYT Postdoctoral Fellowship competition.
UC MEXUS, established in 1980, is an academic research institute dedicated to encouraging, securing, and contributing to binational research and collaborative academic programs and exchanges. Their main focus is to contribute substantially to improving binational scholarly understanding and providing positive contributions to society in both Mexico and the United States, particularly in the graduate and professional areas.
Dr. Roberto de J. León-Montiel arrived at ICFO and joined the Quantum Engineering of Light research group led by UPC Prof at ICFO Juan P. Torres, focusing his doctoral work on developing quantum-based spectroscopy techniques. Upon graduating with a thesis entitled ‘Quantum-Based Spectroscopy and Efficient Energy Transport with Biomolecules’, supervised by Prof Juan P. Torres, he was offered a postdoctoral position at the University of California at San Diego, under the supervision of Dr. Joel Yuen-Zhou from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, UC San Diego. Their winning proposal focuses on “Photochemical Dynamics under Incoherent Illumination: Light-harvesting in Thin-film Cyanine Dye Aggregates”, endowed with 25.000 $ funding prize for an 18-month period.
