Congratulations to BIYSC participant James Zingel, recipient of New Zealand Prime Minister’s Future Science Prize
Zingel honored for his ICFO coordinated research project focused on using quantum physics as a tool for new technologies.
The Barcelona International Youth Science Challenge (BIYSC) is a summer science program organized by Fundació Catalunya- La Pedrera in collaboration with international research centers around Catalonia. It targets young scientists, 16-18 years old, from around the world, with the aim of stimulating scientific talent among high school students, encouraging their enthusiasm to pursue scientific research and careers in science. In keeping with ICFO’s strong Outreach program and mission to help train and inspire the next generation of scientists and technologist, the institute has participated in this program since its founding in 2016.
New Zealander James Zingel participated in the 2019 edition, spending 10 days at ICFO discovering quantum technologies with a team of ICFOnians. During the months that followed, he developed a scientific project that involved the comparison of classical and quantum machine learning algorithms, as well as their implementation in current quantum computers.
The project, whose impressive results led to this prestigious award, was supervised by ICFO postdoctoral researcher in the Quantum Optics Theory, Dr Gorka Muñoz.
